Amina Ganduje’s journey from medical practice to academic distinction

By Umar Idris Shuaibu, Kano

Associate Professor Dr. Amina Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is steadily emerging as one of Nigeria’s promising figures in public health and academic leadership, building a respected profile through dedication, merit and consistent professional excellence.

Despite being the daughter of the former Kano State Governor and immediate past National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, she has continued to chart her own course in the medical and academic world, proving that achievement is earned through commitment and hard work.

Her academic journey began at the University of Maiduguri, where she studied Medicine, laying the foundation for what has become a distinguished career in clinical practice, public health, research and teaching.

Following her graduation, she served as a Medical Officer with the Kano State Ministry of Health at Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital, where she contributed to healthcare delivery with professionalism and dedication.

Dr. Amina’s pursuit of excellence became more evident as she excelled in postgraduate medical training, successfully passing her Primaries, Part I and Part II examinations at first sitting, before attaining Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians within a remarkably short period.

Her commitment to public health advancement further led her to the highly competitive Field Epidemiology Training Programme under CDC-supported AFENET, coordinated through Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The programme is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous in Africa, with a very low selection rate, yet she distinguished herself among the top candidates.

She is among a small number of Kano State indigenous medical doctors who have attained such advanced training in field epidemiology and public health practice.

Currently, she serves in academia as a lecturer in the Department of Community Medicine at Bayero University Kano and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where she is actively involved in teaching, mentorship, research and the development of future medical professionals.

Her leadership qualities and technical competence were also demonstrated through her involvement in public health programmes, including malaria control initiatives and Nigeria’s COVID-19 response efforts, where she contributed alongside other health professionals in combating the spread of the virus in Kano State.

In November last year, her academic career reached another milestone when she was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Public Health by Bayero University Kano in recognition of her contributions to teaching, research and public health development.

The promotion further solidifies her growing reputation as an emerging academic voice in Nigeria’s health and education sector.

Today, Associate Professor Amina Ganduje stands as a symbol of quiet determination and professional excellence, steadily earning her place among Nigeria’s intellectual elite through service, knowledge and impactful contribution to society.
