In Nigerian politics, certain responsibilities demand more than political loyalty. They require experience, organisation, communication skills, legal understanding and the ability to work with people across different levels of a political structure.
These are some of the qualities that have defined the public career of Senator Dr. Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress and now Deputy Secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election.
Basiru’s journey into this role did not begin with the 2027 campaign.
It is the product of years of professional practice, public administration, legislative experience and party organisation.
FROM LAW TO POLITICS
A lawyer and scholar by training, Basiru holds an LLB, LLM and PhD in Property Law from the University of Lagos, alongside studies in Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Ilorin.
His professional career included work with Olaniwun Ajayi Chambers and later partnership at M.A. Banire & Associates.
That legal background has remained an important part of his public career.
Before becoming a national political figure, Basiru served in the Osun State Government as Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties and later as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.
These experiences placed him within the machinery of government and exposed him to policy, administration, law and political engagement.
THE SENATE CHAPTER
In 2019, Basiru was elected to represent Osun Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
His Senate career added another dimension to his experience.
He served as Senate Spokesperson and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, positions that required him to communicate legislative activities, engage the media and articulate institutional positions to the Nigerian public.

FROM THE SENATE TO THE APC NATIONAL SECRETARIAT
In August 2023, Basiru became National Secretary of the APC.
In that capacity, he has been involved in the administration and coordination of the governing party at the national level. The APC subsequently retained him as National Secretary at its 2026 national convention.
His national party position has given him experience working with party leaders, elected officials, stakeholders and structures across the country.
And that experience now intersects with another major responsibility.
WHY THE CAMPAIGN COUNCIL ROLE MATTERS
On August 22, 2026, the Presidency announced the composition of the APC Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is Chairman of the council, Vice President Kashim Shettima is Vice Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yari is Director-General, while Governor Hope Uzodimma is Secretary.
Senator Ajibola Basiru was appointed Deputy Secretary.
The appointment places him within the administrative structure responsible for coordinating the presidential campaign.
His background provides several areas of relevant experience for such a responsibility.
First is party administration.
As APC National Secretary, Basiru already operates within the national structure of the party. This gives him direct experience with party organisation and coordination.
Second is communication.
His previous role as Senate Spokesperson and his experience dealing with the media provide a background relevant to communicating campaign messages and explaining the administration’s policies and record.
Third is legal and institutional experience.
With a professional background in law and experience as a former Attorney General, Basiru brings knowledge of institutions, governance and public administration to his political responsibilities.
And fourth is legislative experience.
Having served in the Senate, he understands the workings of the National Assembly and the relationship between the executive, legislature and political party structures.
WHAT THE ROLE INVOLVES
As Deputy Secretary of the Presidential Campaign Council, Basiru’s responsibilities can include supporting the Secretary in coordinating the council’s activities, facilitating communication among its structures and helping ensure that the different directorates operate within the campaign’s overall framework.
The council has also been directed to communicate the administration’s record and campaign message to Nigerians. President Tinubu specifically urged council members to work toward the party’s electoral objective and to engage other party members in the campaign effort.
Basiru’s role, therefore, is not simply another political title.
It places his organisational, communication and political experience within one of the central structures of the APC’s 2027 presidential campaign.
A POLITICAL OPERATOR AT A CRITICAL MOMENT
Recent activities also demonstrate Basiru’s engagement in political outreach ahead of 2027.
In August 2026, he visited Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and discussions included cooperation relating to President Tinubu’s 2027 campaign.
Whether through party administration, political dialogue, media engagement or campaign coordination, the responsibilities before Basiru are substantial.
The central task for the campaign council is to organise the party’s campaign, communicate its message and present its record to the electorate.
For Basiru, the new assignment represents another stage in a career that has moved from the legal profession, to government, to the Senate, and ultimately to national party leadership.
Ajibola Basiru’s political journey has been built across several platforms: law, government, the legislature, media communication and party administration.
Now, those experiences converge in his role as Deputy Secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
