The Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami (Gomo II), has died in London after a brief illness. He was 81.
Family members confirmed that the retired army officer and traditional ruler passed away on Sunday.
Born on October 24, 1943, Sani Sami joined the Nigerian Army on December 10, 1962, and trained at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, United Kingdom. He was commissioned on July 25, 1963, alongside coursemates such as former military president General Ibrahim Babangida.
During a military career that spanned decades, Sani Sami held several key positions. Under the Murtala Mohammed administration, he served as Commander of the Brigade of Guards in Lagos. Following the coup that brought General Muhammadu Buhari to power in December 1983, he was appointed military governor of Bauchi State, a post he held until August 1985.
After retiring from the army, Sani Sami returned to his community and became the Emir of Zuru, a position in which he earned a reputation for firmness, simplicity, and dedication to cultural values.
The palace is expected to announce funeral arrangements soon.
